Operational 5G Broadcast in DTT networks to cover 40 million 2028.
As announced at the the Mobile World Congress the French telecom and broadcast provider TDF launching the operational deployment of 5G BROADCAST starting in 2026: around twenty sites in France this year to cover more than 12 million inhabitants, followed by a gradual rollout until the end of 2028 with more than 320 sites across the country and more than 40 million people covered. This summer, 5G BROADCAST will also be deployed in the Rennes metro. A concrete demonstration of its ability to operate in mobile environments, including complex ones.
This launch is not an isolated event. It marks the culmination of work undertaken over several years with the entire ecosystem. In 2024, with the public broadcaster France Télévisions, TDF conducted the largest 5G BROADCAST trial ever during the Paris Olympic Games. A full-scale test, in a context of massive audience and maximum demands with radio and television public service channels. TDF is now ready to move from pilot to deployment.
TDF says that the technology works, it is robust, and it meets user needs. In concrete terms, 5G BROADCAST allows you to receive live television on your smartphone: without Wi-Fi, without using mobile data, with very low latency, and with significantly lower energy consumption than traditional data networks.
5G BROADCAST is a natural evolution from terrestrial television (DTT) to mobile devices, but it is also a strategic imperative: guaranteeing free, secure, and reliable access to audiovisual content, even in the event of network congestion. In a context where digital sovereignty and information reliability are essential, this is no small matter according to a TDF press release.
