5G Broadcast

What is 5G Broadcast?

5G Broadcast is the new platform for terrestrial distribution of radio and television. This system has been tested and proven since 2018 in some 20 countries including Germany, France, Italy, Austria, China, South Korea, the UK and the US. It is estimated that 5G Broadcast will replace both DVB-T2 for television and DAB for radio in the terrestrial digital network in the near future. Unlike these systems, which were established in the 1990s, 5G Broadcast can be used to directly receive radio and television on smartphones via the terrestrial network. This without additional costs for the listeners as is the case today with mobile broadband 4G/5G. In addition, the technology has a very high capacity for increased diversity and high image and sound quality.

For the first time, radio and television now have a common platform for broadcasts in the terrestrial network. The technology also enables seamless receiver transition between 5G Broadcast in terrestrial networks and 5G Broadband in mobile networks.

The development of 5G Broadcast has strong support from the broadcasting companies for radio and television. In order to be able to retain their share of their frequency band - Band 108 (470-698 Mhz) - on UHF after 2031, the broadcasters must find innovative solutions that can give consumers an attractive alternative or complement to listening to radio and watching television on-line. Otherwise, it is likely that the mobile operators will take over the frequency spectrum that is currently used for terrestrial radio and television. The mobile phone sector has already taken over the 700 MHz band and to some extent also the 600 MHz band.

There is still (November 2024) no major activity around 5G Broadcast in Sweden. The Public Service Council has monitored the development since 2018 and in letters and a consultation statement in 2023 drew the government's attention to the issue. However, there is a lot reported and documented abroad by the EBU, public service companies, broadcast providers and technology companies in Europe, North America and Asia.
