DRM Becoming the Major Digital Radio Platform in Asia

China reaffirms need for digital audio in all domestic cars

After securing the huge Indian broadcasting market the digital terrestrial radio system DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale) now is strongly positioning itself  in the Chinese domestic market. This will leave DAB  -the other European system - further far behind on the global market.

According to RedTech.pro the Chinese National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA), the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), and the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) jointly met specifically on the provision of audio and video in cars. NRTA and MIIT promoted the inclusion of digital receivers with DRM (and the domestic system CDR) in all domestically produced and imported vehicles to be sold on the domestic market. Last year in their joint letter the Chinese authorities also expressed the intention to accelerate the construction of digital radio broadcasting coverage networks with digital AM broadcasting (DRM) transmission systems at local medium wave transmission stations.

DRM Digital Radio is seen as an essential part of the infrastructure required to enable authorities to deliver digital radio public services in better quality and enhance the in-car radio listening experience.  An additional benefit of DRM technology is the ability to enable in-vehicle emergency alerts, which can be achieved through DRM’s Emergency Warning Function (EWF).

This time the three government agencies asked for the further strengthening of the management of vehicle wireless broadcasting reception, stressing that “the vehicle wireless broadcasting receiving module” is part of the basic configuration of the vehicle, necessary for achieving full matching and standardisation of the vehicle network audio and video services.

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers launched an initiative to the national automobile industry to vigorously promote the installation of broadcasting receiving devices by car companies. Representatives of 31 key automobile manufacturers across the country attended the meeting (RedTech.pro)

DRM is one of  a handfull number of digital systems for terrestrial radio

DRM is a digital system used in the regular AM and FM broadcasting bands (MF, HF and FM).  CDR (China Digital Radio) is a similar domestic system developed in China but has not yet been adopted in other countries. DAB is used predominantly in European countries. In North America HD Radio is the digital platform for terrestrial radio. DAB is operated on special allocations in a frequency band for television and it not compatible with the DRM system. (Read more about this here).  5G Broadcast is a recently launched system for radio and television.

Australia is the only country outside Europe with established DAB broadcasting.  DAB radio was previously broadcast in Hong Kong by public service and commercial broadcasters but was discontinued in 2017. Singapore closed its DAB broadcasting in 2012 and Taiwan ended its trials in 2016.

Besides India and China also Pakistan and Indonesia are now on the road to adopt DRM. In a very near future more than 40 percent of the world population might be in the reach of DRM local and national digital radio. DRM on shortwave already has a global reach.

However, analogue FM and Internet respectively will remain as the two major platforms for radio broadcasting for at least another decade.
